Welcome to a new adventure , to a dance company for the global society, to the wedding of East and West!
Appetite Dance Productions is located at Dance City, North East England and is led by Apple Yang, a Chinese born, UK based innovative and imaginative choreographer who established the company. Since its inception Appetite has quickly earned a reputation as a highly creative and inventive contemporary dance company.
As Artistic Director Apple Yang’s vision is to express and explore dance movement as a trans-global language. In the pursuit of this goal she creates powerful physical narratives that portray the exuberance and travails of life that underpin human relationships across the world.
"Dance is the emergence of Qi, the way of life, the source of creativity. It is a faith and prophesy."
Apple Yang, Artistic Director Appetite Dance Productions
Choreographer Apple Yang creates worlds shaped through her inner experiences as a Chinese woman living in contemporary Britain. In Letter to My Father, she explores her relationship with her father, its challenges, its joy and the hidden woman she has become. Told through expressive and powerful movement language we discover what it means to be a Chinese woman shackled by the weight of expectation.

"They are a company of real integrity and the Artistic Director, Apple Yang, has amazing vision and crosses boarders with her choreographic style and language. Her work is the highest quality and is an important part of dance both regionally and nationally."

"Life After Life, a breathtaking, extraordinary performance"
Review by Chris Speyer, Author of Devil's Rock
"In Life After Life we see the multitudinous aspects of one life, reminiscent, perhaps, of Shakespeare's. In The Heart Of Him, we see one man in his life plays many parts but with a much wider focus, whilst in The Heart of Him we see the same multiplicity but through contact with - almost through the eyes of - others"
Review by Peter Lathan (2011), The British Theatre Guide
Life After Life takes the audience on the Hero's journey from birth, through the playful innocence of childhood, the arrogance of youth, along the struggling passageways into adult life. Balancing the quest for individuality with the demands of tradition.
What do we know of each other? How well do we know ourselves? What gives us the strength to carry on, to believe in ourselves, to make a life?
In The Heart of Him a man tells his story – showing us the details of his character through his meetings with others. We come to know him not by what he says but by how he moves.
A Dance Installation Piece @ Blackfriars, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A meeting, and at first a holding off, a fear of the unfamiliar, of the other. Each new arrival is opposed. Each new religion is resisted, until a conversation, a wary dance shows each the other need not threaten, but can offer a way of seeing, a new way of being in the world. Then, what once was foreign becomes familiar, and apprehension softens, east enters into west, and face-to-face a smile of recognition finds a common centre, ourselves reflected in the other.
In the middle of Newcastle two seemingly very different institutions stand face-to-face; Blackfriars, originally the centre for Dominican Christianity, and, across the road, the Newcastle Chinese community.
You can watch video's of our performances on our Vimeo Channel.
To accompany our productions, we devise outreach programmes that uses dance as a tool to promote greater cultural awareness, understanding and appreciation between people of the UK and those from East Asian backgrounds. We offer a wide range of teaching and training projects to all ages and abilities. Participants can expect to engage in an experience that is both challenging and enjoyable, to explore our style, learn new dance skills in a supportive and creative atmosphere. We provide outreach workshops and classes in community settings, schools, colleges and arts centres.
We investigate physical vocabularies and narrative through movement mapping, all of which will have relevance to participants’ lives, socially, mentally and spiritually, and investigate physical impact on participants through the process of finding joy, tolerance, faith and hope.
"Appetite Dance Productions is passionately to serve the society, through dance and to drawing a board range of national and international artists and creative organisations in a continuing process of participatory learning. We seek every opportunity to share what we have leant and what we have created through interactive performances and workshops"
